James T. McManus, II
Chairman and CEO of Energen and its Subsidiaries

James McManus is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Energen Corporation and its subsidiaries. McManus joined Energen in 1986 and has held numerous senior-level positions. In 1997 he became President and Chief Operating Officer of Energen Resources and, over the next decade, led the growth of Energen’s exploration & production business from a small niche player in coalbed methane development in Alabama to one of the top 25 independent oil and gas producers in the United States.  Prior to joining Energen, he worked with Price Waterhouse Coopers.

McManus is active in a number of professional organizations.  He is a member of the National Petroleum Council (NPC), American Gas Association (AGA), America’s Natural Gas Alliance (ANGA), and the U.S. Oil and Gas Association, a member of the board and past executive committee member of the American Exploration Production Council (AXPC); and a past director of the Independent Producers Association of America (IPAA) and Gas Technology Institute (GTI). 

In the community, McManus is Chairman of the Board of the Birmingham Business Alliance (BBA). He also is a board member of the Business Council of Alabama (BCA), Economic Development Partnership of Alabama (EDPA), Downtown Rotary, and Alabama Council – Boy Scouts of America. McManus serves on the Corporate Board of the Alys Stephens Center. He is past president of the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama (PARCA) and serves on its executive committee. He is a member of The University of Alabama President’s Cabinet and Chairperson of the Board of Visitors of The University of Alabama Business Schools and a member of the University of Alabama – Birmingham (UAB) Leadership Council.  McManus also is a member of the Investment Committee of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham and serves on the Board of Directors of the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau.

A Certified Public Accountant, McManus earned a B.S. in Accounting at The University of Alabama.
