Automated Meter Reading (AMR)

What is AMR?
AMR stands for Automated Meter Reading. This technology enables your gas meter to be read using a vehicle or a hand held device. This is a proven technology that allows for accurate collection of meter readings.  Alagasco is about to begin a three year program to convert all residential, commercial and industrial meters to this new technology.

How does a mobile AMR system work?
A mobile AMR system uses a data gathering device placed in a vehicle to efficiently collect meter reading data from a module installed on your meter.  As the vehicle drives down the street, a radio signal is sent to each meter module and the meter reading data is transmitted back to the collection device.  This information is then sent to our billing department.  You will receive a gas bill in the same way as you do now.

What are the benefits of AMR?
There are several benefits to AMR.  The AMR reduces the number of bills that are estimated and offers increased accuracy since manual data entry will be eliminated.  Alagasco will no longer be required to enter a customer’s property to gain access to read the meter.

Can a customer still read their own meter to keep up with their natural gas consumption?
Yes.  The dials on the meter will not change and customers who want to read their own meter will be able to do so.

Will the transmitter interfere with a radio, phone or computer?
No.  The system operates on a low-power frequency of less than one watt.  The transmission will not interfere with the operation of televisions, radios, stereo equipment, garage door openers, wireless internet connections or other electronic devices commonly found in a home or business.

Will I need to be at home when AMR is installed?
In most cases you will not need to be at home.  Alagasco will need to have access to our meter to perform the work.  If work could not be performed or completed, a door hanger will be left at your home or business.  The door hanger will provide information on why the work could not be completed and a number to call for more details.

Who will do the work and how much will it cost?
Alagasco personnel will perform the work on the meter at no charge. Effective May 23, 2011, TruCheck, Alagasco's approved contractor, will perform installations in the Birmingham area.

Will I be notified before the work begins?
All Alagasco customers will receive a postcard before the work begins.  These same customers will also be notified by phone closer to the date the work will be performed.
