FAQs
Payment Options
There are several ways to pay your gas bill electronically. On the Alagasco website, you can enroll in our free eBill service. Instead of a paper bill, you will receive an email notification each month informing you that your gas bill has been issued and is ready for payment.
Through our website, you can also make an ePayment using the Western Union® Speedpay® service. You will continue to receive your paper bill each month. Western Union charges a service fee of $3.95 per transaction.
We also offer a free Bank Draft option. You will continue to receive a paper bill, and on the delinquent date of the bill we will submit a draft to your bank monthly for the amount of your gas bill.
Western Union® Speedpay® charges a convenience fee of $3.95 per transaction. Alagasco does not receive any portion of the convenience fee. The fee is paid directly to Western Union Speedpay for providing this service to our customers. It is in addition to your Alagasco payment.
There is no charge to pay your bill if you use eBill or Bank Draft.
We’ve contracted with merchants in your community to provide bill payment services. Conveniently located in grocery stores, convenience stores, drugstores, etc., our authorized payment agents have extended business hours and process payments electronically.
Payment agents are not able to stop or place orders on accounts that have a pending disconnect order or if service has already been disconnected.

Many things affect the amount of your gas bill each month. Two major components are the weather and the number of days in a billing period.
Outside temperature
Even a few colder-than-normal days will affect the amount of natural gas used, thus increasing the amount of your bill. Remember, the colder it is outside, the more frequent the thermostat turns the furnace on. To find out the temperatures for the days you were billed, you can go to www.weather.com and look for the previous month’s high and low temperatures. If you work during the day, remember that most heat is needed after working hours when you are at home and the weather is colder.
The billing period
The dates of the meter readings are listed on your bill under "Service Period." Alagasco tries to read meters every 30 days, but some service periods may have more or less days due to holidays and other meter reading schedule changes. If your billing period is more than 30 days, that alone can have an impact on the amount of your gas bill for that month.
Your Alagasco bill is based on the amount of natural gas used during a billing period. Comparing a bill from year to year is a more accurate comparison of actual gas usage.
The best way to look at your bill, especially in the winter, is to compare your current bill to the same month in the previous year. For example, compare March of this year to March of the previous year. For an even better evaluation, compare a period of several months. And keep in mind, gas rates change over the course of the year.
Although tempting, it’s important to avoid comparing your bill to a neighbor’s bill. There are too many factors that affect your bill, and those factors will be different from your neighbor:
- Number of people in the family
- Number of days in the billing period
- Personal living habits
- Thermostat setting
- Efficiency of equipment
- Insulation of home
An empty or vacant home doesn’t mean the home won’t use energy.
- People, furniture, drapes, etc. will keep the house warm. Therefore, an empty house can use just as much (sometimes more) than if the house was occupied.
- Thermostats will turn furnaces on when the temperature in the house falls below the thermostat setting. This will occur regardless if anyone is at home or not.
- The colder it is outside, the more frequently the thermostat turns the furnace on.
- Insulation is a major factor. Some houses may be more insulated than others.
Here is a list of other factors that could contribute to a higher than normal use of natural gas in your home:
- New gas equipment added to your home
- Faulty or inefficient equipment being used
- Added rooms
- Illness
- Pool heater
- New baby in family
- Company with an extended stay
- High water bill
