Natural gas is a clean fossil fuel that heats water, warms homes, dries clothes and delivers delicious meals to millions of customers just like you. Gas utilities serve more than 63 million residential customers and more than 5 million commercial enterprises. Natural gas supplies nearly one-fourth (23 percent) of all of the energy used in the United States.
Natural gas…
- has a high energy density, meaning its unique, natural properties work harder and more efficiently with less waste.
- is a clean fuel that has lower emissions compared to other energy choices, including electricity.
- is a practical and attainable energy choice that is readily available today.
- is a domestic fuel, produced right here in the United States.
For benefits of specific natural gas appliances, please visit our Appliance Guide. Learn how natural gas can be the comfortable and responsible choice for your home or business.
Natural gas is a great choice for appliances like…water heaters, furnaces, space heaters, clothes dryers, outdoor grills, outdoor lights, ranges, ovens and cooktops, fireplace logs, pool heaters and generators. For benefits of specific natural gas appliances, please visit our Appliance Guide
Homes that use natural gas for home heating, water heating and other applications produce 50 percent less carbon (CO2) emissions than all-electric homes. Most homes require electricity. But, for individual appliances, such as stoves, water heaters, dryers and heating equipment, homeowners do have an energy choice. So, when you have that choice, choose natural gas.
While Alagasco does not sell appliances, we can refer you to local retailers for your appliance needs.

Natural gas appliances in your home reduce carbon emissions by 50 percent compared to electric.
Direct use of natural gas reduces energy waste. More than 90 percent of the natural gas that is produced is delivered to your home and used directly by your natural gas appliances. In contrast, only 30 percent of the fuel (coal, natural gas or oil) used to generate electricity actually reaches your electric appliances. This means that 70 percent of the energy used to generate electricity is lost during the process of generating, transmitting and distributing the electricity to your home. (Source: U.S. Department of Energy)
The direct use of natural gas in your home appliances is more efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly than electricity.
During the electric generation process – meaning its journey from the power plant to the electric outlet – electricity loses an average of 70 percent of its useable energy. This means electric heating appliances, even supposedly highly efficient ones, actually waste large amounts of energy. By contrast, from the wellhead to your home, natural gas loses only about 10 percent of its useable energy. (Source: American Gas Association)
Alagasco is one of the founding member companies that helped establish the Council for Responsible Energy (CRE) in 2008. CRE is currently composed of more than 190 companies involved in the natural gas industry, including natural gas suppliers, natural gas marketing companies, transmission companies, distributors and appliance manufacturers and distributors.
The Council for Responsible Energy was formed to educate and build awareness of natural gas as one of the most responsible energy choices. Consumers, builders and businesses can save energy, reduce emissions and help protect the environment without compromising performance or lifestyle by choosing natural gas.
There is a growing sense of social and environmental responsibility in our communities. The Council for Responsible Energy’s research tells us that people want to do the right thing when it comes to the environment, but they don’t want to give up their comfort and lifestyle to do so. We think it’s important for consumers to know that natural gas is a readily-available energy alternative that helps reduce carbon emissions.
One notable fact about natural gas is that it didn’t just turn ‘green’ overnight. Alagasco is proud to say that natural gas has always been the environmentally friendly choice. Homes that use natural gas for heating, water heating, cooking and other appliances produce 50 percent less carbon emissions compared to all-electric homes. Natural gas is the comfortable, responsible solution.
Carbon footprint is a term that refers to your impact on the environment and an estimate of your carbon (or greenhouse gas) emissions. Factors such as how many people live in your home, how many miles you drive, your recycling habits and the type of energy you use in your home all affect your carbon footprint. To calculate your home’s carbon footprint, visit www.ComfortableResponsible.org.
