CNG - Environmental Benefits

Natural gas…a natural, eco-friendly transportation fuel

Utilizing the cleanest fossil fuel, natural gas vehicles (NGVs) reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.

Compressed natural gas (CNG) is the cleanest burning alternative transportation fuel. CNG has fewer emissions than any other vehicle fuel being used today. For example, the natural gas-powered Honda Civic GX is recognized by the U.S. EPA as the cleanest commercially available, internal-combustion vehicle on earth.

Unlike gasoline and diesel vehicles that emit large amounts of particulate matter, natural gas is virtually particulate free, producing up to 95% less particulate matter.

Exhaust emissions from a typical NGV are much lower than those from gasoline-powered vehicles. Compared to gasoline powered vehicles, NGVs can reduce:

  • carbon monoxide by 70 percent
  • non-methane gas by 87 percent
  • NOx (nitrous oxides) by 87 percent
  • carbon dioxide by almost 20 percent.

Natural gas cars also produce far less urban emissions than diesel vehicles. Compared to heavy-duty diesel engines, natural gas heavy-duty engines produce about:

  • 83 percent less smog
  • 15 percent less greenhouse gas.

Replacing one garbage truck with a natural gas powered truck produces the same environmental benefits as removing 325 cars from the road.

Natural gas…a natural for clean groundwater

Gasoline and diesel fuel are some of the most serious groundwater contamination sources. These petroleum products enter the groundwater supply a number of ways – from leaking underground storage tanks at fueling stations and from tanker truck spills caused by truck accidents.

Natural gas is not toxic or corrosive and will not contaminate ground water. Since natural gas is lighter than air, any leaks that occur dissipate harmlessly and do not enter the ground water system.
