- Determine your size requirements. Be aware that a larger heater may be more economical if it doesn’t have to work as long. Heaters are rated by Btu output, which range from 75,000 Btu to 450,000 Btu.
Calculating Approximate Size for a Natural Gas Pool Heater
1. Determine desired pool temperature
2. Determine the average temperature for the coldest month of use
3. Subtract the average temperature for the coldest month from the desired pool temperature. This = temperature rise.
4. Calculate pool surface area
5. Use the following formula to determine Btu/hour output
requirement of the heater
Pool Area x Temperature Rise x 12 |
- Consider ignition options. Choose a standard electronic ignition system that activates the pilot light on an as-needed basis.
- Look for highest efficiency heaters. To keep your costs lower, shop for a heater that is as close to 100% efficient as possible.
- Comparison shop. Get several estimates and compare the total cost of product, installation and operating costs.
